Llamas come from the Andes in South America: Bolivia, Peru, Argentina, Chile, Ecuador and Colombia. These high mountains are provided with rare herbaceous alpine vegetation. They resist to the seasonal sub-nutrition. It is a very soft and peaceful pet. Assaulted, he defends himself by spitting saliva mixed with food. Everybody remembers the Captain Haddock in Tintin "the temple of the sun» victim of the spit of a bad-tempered llama. Llamas and alpacas rarely spit to people.

The lama has his own mind and should be educated. His use is highly varied according to countries :
It is a pet.
This is a pack animal for hiking; his charges are based on his training.
He is very popular in pet therapy (contacts with a public handicapped person).
His fleece uses for making fabrics, cushions, tapestries or cords.
It is an excellent strimmer, silent and clean.
It is an excellent guard of herd. He will defend his herd without having learnt of the attacks against stray dogs and foxes.
His excrements, always put down in the same place, will serve as fertilizer. In some countries, dried excrements are an excellent fuel.
